The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is a professional organization that reviews the latest publications in the understanding of pathology of the nervous system, and how to treat neurologic disease using both surgical and non-surgical treatments. There are over eight thousand members of this organization in the United States and worldwide. The AANS website is located at http://www.aans.org, where current and prospective future member can go to access online information and to inquire about other educational resources, including online videos and print newsletters. The mission of the organization is to provide with their members with access to the latest literature describing the safest and most effective treatments available to manage or cure neurologic diseases. The AANS aims to provide the highest quality of neurological care to the public by organizing and operating neurology conferences and offering grants and fellowships to young doctors and medical students that are seeking to specialize in neurology.

Mission Statement:
  • The AANS was founded and run to provide patients in any region or community with the most state of the art healthcare facilities, and the most qualified doctors. The AANS was also founded in order to provide doctors with all the resources they need to learn the latest surgical techniques that put themselves as well as their patients in the best position for successful treatment outcomes.
  • The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) will be very aggressive in monitoring the latest research breakthroughs in the understanding of the central and peripheral nervous system, and the most recent innovative technologies in the treatment of neurologic pathology. The AANS will monitor the progress of technological breakthroughs being made in research and biomedical facilities throughout the United States as they learn new ways to see the brain and fix pathology with minimally invasive techniques. The AASN will publish information through their multi-media resources as these latest diagnostic and treatment techniques become available, or where they are in their phase of development.
  • The AASN will seek to be the bridge between hospital clinics, professional medical associations, research facilities, and for profit biomedical companies, government organizations, and patient advocacy groups.
  • The AASN will advocate for the most effective and safest neurologic treatments available, including those that involve neurosurgery and alternative non-surgical treatments.

All active members of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) must be licensed medical doctors and board certified by the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, A.C., Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Neurosurgery is the branch of medicine that specializes in understanding of the anatomy and function of the structures of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves that branch off the spinal cord and travel to nearly each cell of the body. Neurosurgeons, who perform Neurosurgery, are to diagnose and treat neurologic conditions, and also to monitor the progress of their patients as the recover and rehabilitate from their neurological condition and the affects of their neurosurgery.

The AASN is active politically, advocating for healthcare bills that enable all Americans to have access to the best neurosurgeons and clinical facilities, regardless of the patient's location or financial status. The AASN has frequently sent research materials to politicians at the local, state, and national levels to make them aware of cutting edge treatments such as the rhBMPs for Spinal Fusion, and what steps can be made to ensure that all patients who may benefit from this treatment will receive it.

The headquarters of the AANS is located at 5550 Meadowbrook Drive, in Rolling Meadows Illinois, 60008. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons is also known as the Congress of Neurologic Surgeons.
