NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs)

NSAIDs, or Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, are general pain and back pain medications that are distinguished from steroidal drugs that are mainly delivered by injection, and narcotic drugs, which are opioid based analgesics. NSAIDs are one of the oldest non-narcotic medications on the market, and used for a variety of purposed related to pain and fever. Most NSAIDs are used to reduce fever to minor colds and flu, but they do not function in the same way as antibiotics. NSAIDs perform on two levels to fight joint related pain: by acting as anti-inflammatories, and by blocking pain more directly. NSAIDs are considered to be effective in short-term use to reduce pain and inflammation to minor medical conditions, injury, and contagious illness. NSAIDs used more chronically and in the long term disrupt normal body processed that help us regulate our health. Here, we will discuss the benefits of NSAIDs, list some of the most available ones, their mechanism of action, and their adverse effects. The Benefits of NSAIDs: Before we start badmouthing NSAIDs, we must start this discussion by saying that for short term use and, NSAIDs has helped millions of Americans with minor aches and pains, and during recovery from chronic illnesses as they heal from surgery and physical therapy. This drug works on nearly all people to minimize conditions that cause pain, such as headaches, osteoarthritis, and contagious illnesses that may cause fever. These drugs are not associates with dependence or abuse, and they produce few side effects in the short term unless they are taken in unsafe doses. NSAIDs will lessen pain levels, for nearly all types of conditions that cause joint pain, including chondromalacia patella of the knee, shoulder tendonitis, and foot spurs. These medications, including naproxen, ibuprofen, and aspirin, affect our experience of pain and inflammation by blocking the production of prostaglandins, which play a role in numerous other bodily functions, including blood clotting, kidney function, and stomach lining protection. Prostaglandins are lipid compounds that include a 5-carbon ring and a chain of 20 carbon atoms, and function in a similar way to hormones in their ability to affect various physiologic processes in the body. Prostaglandins are produced in nearly all the cells of the body, and can be synthesized and released by the cells to control cell growth, regulate calcium movement, and regulate inflammatory mediation. This last bodily process that prostaglandins are involved is especially important to its role in affecting joint pain and back pain. There are several different types of prostaglandins, and several different types of pharmaceutical medications that can be taken by patients. Examples of prostaglandin antagonists include Cyclopentenone prostaglandins, COX-2 inhibitors, Corticosteroids, and NSAIDs.
